As you know, the teeth of children still occur in the fetus stage. The mother has a very important role in their children’s teeth development, maintaining a healthy nutrition. Mother’s diet should contain adequate amounts of calcium, phosphorus, vitamin C and D. Certain antibiotics, such as tetracycline, should not be administered to the mother while she is pregnant, because this can cause damage to the teeth of children.
There are four stages of children’s teeth development:
-The first stage begins in the fetus at about 6 weeks. Now is forming the basic substance of the teeth
-Then, the tissue surrounding the teeth is formed, around 3rd or 4th months of the pregnancy
-After the baby is born, the next stage occurs when the teeth actually comes through the gum (erupt).
-And finally comes the tooth fairy to take the child’s milk teeth and brings a new ones
There are many opinions that say that baby teeth are not important, and that is why many parents do not pay special attention to their children’s teeth.
The idea that milk teeth anyway change and therefore it should not be cared for or treated them, is as much widespread as it is wrong.
It is true that milk teeth have a temporary existence on dental arches and in a few years after their eruption, they are mobilizing and fall! (Milk teeth are also called temporary teeth). The first milk tooth is mobilizing at 6 year and the last ~ 12 year. Soon and naturally, baby teeth are replaced by permanent teeth. Because of this replacement is paid less attention to their care and treatment in a wrong.
As specialists, we consider important to promote and argue for the idea that baby teeth are important, – in counterpart to these erroneous popular ideas -!
Why are baby teeth important?
1. Milk teeth, located in the dental arch, maintain the required space for the permanent teeth’s eruption. Premature loss of baby teeth can lead to the malposition of the permanent teeth, and thus appears the need for orthodontic treatments. One of the main causes of premature loss of baby teeth are the dental caries.
2. All the 20 milk teeth erupt free of cavities (caries-free). Cared for, kept and maintained healthy baby teeth provide the comfort and the pleasure of mastication any tasty food. If you get sick, baby teeth will send pain sensation at sweet, pain on mastication of fresh fruits, on hot soup or cold cream.
Consequently, the child will not be able to nurture healthy and will not seek the pleasure of mastication, he will just swallow the food. In the absence of healthy chewing, the baby teeth will look as “unused and rusty plow from grandfather’s yard ,” that will be covered by tartar and plaque, which will produce cavities.
3. Jaws (mandible and upper jaw) – on which are placed the baby teeth, receive from them growth and development stimulus during the mastication. In the absence of a healthy chewing, jaws will remain underdeveloped to receive all the 32 permanent teeth. The risk of not be able to adapt harmoniously grows, and the teeth may erupt crowded and that’s another reason for necessary orthodontic device.
Milk teeth can stay healthy?
Yup! Parents are primarily responsible for maintaining milk teeth in good health. For this, they need to know, or if they do not know, they must inform themselves from a specialized source of how baby teeth cavities can be avoided.
Milk teeth can be protected, sealed and treated?
Yup! But parents must take regularly the child to the dentist since the eruption of the first tooth. Neglecting simple decay on baby teeth can expose the child to complicated and emergency care dental experience -negative perceived- and this usually before the age at which the child could understand the need for it.
