Risks of incorrect tooth veneering treatment

Risks of incorrect tooth veneering treatment

It is almost universally known, especially among younger patients or those with high aesthetic expectations, that veneering is one of the modern solutions for a beautiful, white smile that helps to increase self-esteem.

They also protect teeth and correct a number of aesthetic problems.

Dental veneers are no longer a treatment exclusively for those who are public figures or in extremely good financial circumstances.

They have become a common treatment that can benefit a wide range of patients, but the main criterion is to carry out a near-perfect hygiene of the oral cavity, using also auxiliary means, in a correct way.

The downside of this is if veneers are applied incorrectly. Instead of guaranteeing a dream smile and having a positive effect on the patient, incorrectly applied veneers can cause serious problems in addition to an unsightly smile.

The indications for veneers are as follows:

  • Treated or untreated tooth decay that is unsightly

  • Abnormalities in tooth position – crowded teeth, teeth with altered position or other shape abnormalities benefit from this type of treatment to align the dental arches and create a sense of harmony.

  • Dyschromia – unsightly color changes that cannot be remedied by other treatments.

  • Crown cracks or fractures. Once the root is affected, the treatment scheme changes and in severe cases may lead to tooth extraction.

Risks of applying dental veneers:

Gingival inflammation – if dental veneers violate the gingival biological space – if they are in contact with or at a short distance from the gums and bacterial plaque accumulates at the interface, as a result of poor hygiene, the phenomenon of inflammation of the gums will occur.

The first sign of gingival inflammation is bleeding, which can occur when brushing or even spontaneously.

If rigorous hygiene is not established, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, which can eventually lead to tooth loss.

Gingival inflammation is a phenomenon that occurs especially when contraindications are not followed and a compromise is reached, especially if they should not be applied.

Defects in the cementation process of veneers – if the veneer is not intimately adapted to the tooth surface a small gap may appear, an environment conducive to the development of an environment with increased bacterial content.

Cracks – whether it is a defect in the manufacturing process, mishandling or failure to follow instructions (hardness of food consumed, consumption of extreme hot or very cold foods), cracks can occur in veneers, especially those made of ceramic.

Descaling – by not following the instructions or by incorrect handling protocol, facets can become descaled.

In some cases, patients present with them intact to the practice and in other cases they fracture after debonding.
