Vitamins and their contribution to oral health

The body is a complex made up of all the structures that ensure a balance allowing normal functioning. The oral cavity with its component structures plays a particularly important role in the realization of several functions such as:

Phonation – through the contribution of the teeth, tongue and soft tissues, the articulation of sounds and, implicitly, phonation is achieved. A dental imbalance leads to slurred, hissing or slurred speech.

Feeding – the oral cavity is the first segment of the digestive system, involved in the prehension, grinding and formation of the food bolus which is then transported to the lower structures of the digestive tract. With missing teeth, food will not be properly crushed, so there is a risk that large pieces of food will end up in the stomach, making digestion difficult.

Esthetics – is a particularly important function for patients, both young and old, because it increases confidence, self-esteem.

Patients’ beautiful smiles start from good oral health and a rigorous hygiene protocol.

Problematic teeth are unattractive, they can hide serious pathologies and late dental treatments reduce the chances of maintaining teeth in the dental arches.

A healthy diet is the main ally in the aesthetics and functionality of the teeth and the entire oral cavity, but also for the body.

However, sometimes, due to limited time, stress or food preferences, patients fail to meet their daily intake of vitamins, which can cause problems in hard and soft tissues.

The vitamins directly involved in maintaining oral health are:

Vitamin A – plays an important role in cell development so in its absence, the healing process is noticeably slowed down.

In case of interventions on the oral cavity, the lack of vitamin A leads to poor or much slower healing.

In order to ensure vitamin A intake, it is recommended to eat vegetables and fruits with a port-colored skin.

Vitamin B – the full complement of B vitamins plays a very important role in modulating immunity.

Vitamin B deficiency can lead to the appearance of oral candidiasis, i.e. the appearance of whitish deposits on the mucous membranes, through decreased immunity.

Lack of vitamin B complex intake can also lead to cracks at the corners of the mouth.

Cereals are a rich source of vitamin B.

Vitamin C is closely linked to the synthesis of collagen, which is important in maintaining the elasticity and trophicity of the oral mucosa. Lack of vitamin C in the body also leads to prolonged bleeding and gum sensitivity. Citrus fruits and tomatoes are rich sources of vitamin C.

Vitamin D is particularly important in maintaining healthy bone structures, without it even spontaneous fractures can occur. Vitamin D is directly linked to the development of dental units.

Vitamin K is important in the blood clotting process, in its absence excessive bleeding occurs, which is difficult to control by local mechanisms.

It is recommended to eat a variety of carefully selected foods to ensure that the body receives all the nutrients it needs for harmonious development.
