This is a case presentation from our dental prosthetics portfolio.

The patient presented for prosthetic restoration of the upper arch – specifically, replacement of an old metal-ceramic work with a zirconia ceramic one.

The patient complains of unsatisfactory prosthetic solutions applied in the past, recurrent documentation of the old work, recurrent gingival bleeding.

Following radiological investigations and clinical examination, we found edematous gingiva, old metal-ceramic dental bridges that were damaged and improperly adapted to the tooth.

We recommended replacing them with new, correctly adapted ones made of modern materials.

The patient agreed with the proposed treatment plan and, after removing the old work, we took dental impressions for the new prosthetic work.

The treatment plan proposed and carried out consisted of vital extirpations of all the remaining teeth, making of Chrome-Cobalt RCRs and remakes of the prosthetic bridges.

The crowns chosen were made of anatomical zirconium.

At the first follow-up visit, the patient was extremely satisfied with the new dental work. He felt comfortable and had normal chewing. Following the treatment, the patient regained self-confidence and can eat his favorite foods without difficulty.

We are proud to be able to provide quality treatments for our patients, thus improving their quality of life.

In the modern world of dentistry, technological advances have led to the development of innovative materials and techniques to treat dental problems with superior aesthetics and increased durability. Among these, zirconia-supported ceramic dental crowns have gained ground as a popular choice for restoring teeth. This article explores the features, manufacturing process, benefits and indications of these special dental crowns.

Ceramic and Zirconia for Excellent Performance

Zirconia-supported ceramic dental crowns are an ingenious synthesis of the best features of both materials. The ceramic used for the visible part of the crown provides outstanding aesthetics, while zirconia, a hard and durable ceramic material, provides the structural support.

Zirconia properties:

Zirconia is a versatile ceramic material, valued for its strength and excellent biocompatibility. As a translucent material, zirconia can be easily adapted to match the color and texture of natural teeth. This makes it a suitable choice for dental restorations in the front of the mouth, where aesthetics plays a key role.

Ceramic qualities:

The ceramic used for the zirconia veneer is carefully selected to mimic the optical properties of natural tooth enamel. This means that zirconia-backed ceramic dental crowns can blend seamlessly into a patient’s smile, providing a natural and appealing aesthetic.

Advanced Manufacturing Process

The production of zirconia supported ceramic dental crowns involves the use of CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing) technology. This process begins

with digital scanning of the patient’s tooth model to obtain an accurate three-dimensional image of the dental arch. Next, a virtual model of the crown is created using specialized computer-aided design software.

The next step involves milling the zirconia framework according to the digital model. This is then veneered with ceramic to achieve the desired shape, color and texture. This step requires skilled workmanship to achieve fine detail and a perfect fit.

Benefits of Zirconia Backed Ceramic Dental Crowns

  • Superior Aesthetic Appearance: Ceramics provide a natural match to existing teeth, making the crowns almost indistinguishable in the patient’s smile.

  • Durability and Strength: Zirconia provides a strong and durable support for the crown, ensuring increased durability. This means that crowns can withstand normal wear and tear for a long time.

  • Biocompatibility: Both ceramic and zirconia are biocompatible materials, minimizing the risk of adverse reactions.

  • Long-Lasting Aesthetics: Ceramics resist discoloration and staining, ensuring that the appearance of the crown remains attractive over time.

Indications for Using Zirconia-Backed Ceramic Dental Crowns

Zirconia-backed ceramic dental crowns are recommended for a variety of situations, including:

  • Restoration of front or back teeth.

  • Replacing old or damaged crowns.

  • Correcting aesthetic or tooth alignment problems.

Conclusion

Zirconia-supported ceramic dental crowns are an excellent choice for patients looking to restore the aesthetics and functionality of their teeth. Combining the advantages of zirconia and ceramic, these crowns offer a durable, biocompatible and highly aesthetic treatment solution. However, consultation with a dentist is essential to determine the most appropriate treatment option for each individual case.
